Ft.
Sumner has successfully combined the legends of the late 19th
century with the vision of the 21st century. The legendary outlaw
Billy the Kid sought refuge from the long arm of the law in Old Fort
Sumner, only to meet his demise there at the hands of Sheriff Pat
Garrett. Today, Western enthusiasts from around the world flock to
the village nestled along the Pecos River to view the final resting
place of the "Kid’.
In June of each year, the Village of Ft. Sumner celebrates the
legacy of Billy the Kid with Old Fort Days. The weeklong celebration
combines the nostalgia of the western outlaw with the hospitality
and charm of rural New Mexico. The event features food, games,
dancing, rodeo and much, much more. It concludes with Ft. Sumner’s
claim to fame, the "World’s Richest Tombstone Race". Contestants
from across the country compete for cash prizes in a unique obstacle
course while carrying a replica of Billy the Kid’s Tombstone.
Not content to rest on the legends of the past, Ft. Sumner is the
site of some of the most intense research of the Earth’s atmosphere,
as NASA scientists launch lighter than air balloons each summer to
probe and sample the outer reaches of our planet.
